I’m not an “Old Farmer” so why do I get the “Almanac?”

almanacToday, before midnight, as practiced on every New Year’s Eve since 1978, I will purchase the next year’s

OLD FARMER’S ALMANAC.

WHY?  I don’t farm…I don’t even garden.  Instead, I support real farmers by purchasing fresh, locally-grown produce throughout the seasonal availability.

IS IT FOR THE FORECASTS?  No, I am reluctant to care ahead of time about what conditions the sky drops on us.

2013 marks the 221st consecutive year of publication since the Almanac’s founding by Robert Thomas in 1792, inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s “Poor Richard’s Almanack” which was published annually from 1733-58.  In that era where most Americans followed an agrarian lifestyle, the typical household only possessed two books…the Holy Bible and the almanac.

DO I STUDY THE SKY?  Well, I suppose this might serve as my resolution for 2013. The pages of each year’s Almanac is stuffed with data of sunrises, sunsets, moonrises, moonsets, positions of our planets, phases of the moon, seasonal changes, tidal times, even declination angles of the sun’s path. For hundreds of generations humanity paid close attention to the movement of the celestial bodies…that’s how the Mayans and many other cultures developed calendars, even in pre-literate societies.  These cycles contribute to the rhythms of our being.  For me, I want to grow my awareness of these repetitions, and a daily study of my new 2013 Almanac will deepen my presence on this plane.

About orangeacorn

We are, I believe, and everything is, in perpetual unfolding/enfolding/evolving. By surface appearances, we're in turmoil and fearfullness, but in fact our existence is on the edge of a new way, beyond the US versus THEM we have grown with. I encourage you to join me over coffee or tea in face-to-face encounters. I call this exercise, "CAFFEINE COMMUNION: Encounters with Paradigm Pioneers." I'm a Columbus, Ohio husband, father and citizen. I practice string band sounds from the ridges of Pocahontas County, West Virginia, the vortex of the ancient drone.
