Café Brioso set the stage for Rick and I to reunite over our cups of steaming bean.
I’ve known Rick Isbell since his days serving Mike Coleman’s administration at City Hall. He was our man for veterans advocacy and rights for Columbus’ disabled citizens. And he hasn’t stopped, as he still helps veterans have a voice through their practice of the written word, writing. A highlight of this passion was his coordination of the Writers Guild, from New York, visiting Columbus for a veterans workshop at Thurber House.
Rick describes his CORE VALUES as old fashioned, to be helpful, being present, at the ready to help others. He’s an Air Force veteran of Gulf War 1, circa 1990, and mission-oriented to help other local veterans through writing, through theatre, through visual arts.
Projects going on now for Rick include pending publication of his third book, targeting young readers, distributed through Amazon. He both writes and illustrates his books, with Dr. Seuss and Charles Schultz as major influences, since his own childhood.
Life-hacks…how does Rick keep sharp? Reading/listening…generally keeping his eyes open and radar on.
On UNCERTAINTY…Rick has disciplined himself to remain calm in unsettling moments, as he’s determined that he has to be the rock, the one others depend upon.
PERSONAL GOAL: Rick sets the example, wants to inspire others to pursue their goals as he himself has. His Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG), is to write full time, to do projects for companies, the likes of Disney-Pixar. To do this means he’s found it necessary to sacrifice participation with some of the veterans programs that he’s helped to thrive.
In 5-years, 2022? “My hope is that we’re done with war, that we’re out of the Middle East, that we take care of all of the veterans we’ve made.”
“We have to curb our base reactions, we need to evolve away from operating with our animal mind. We’re pack animals, we’re followers.”
Rick– thank you. Thank you for your service, and thank you for your time with me.
