A relative newbie to the 614, Sarah relocated from Vermont circa 2014. Within a year she found the not-for-profit mission that her experience and passion prepared her for, as she serves as the executive director for Simply Living. While a Vermont resident, she had served as the board president of the Brattleboro Food Co-op, and represented her House District in the Vermont legislature for five 2-year terms. YEP- Sarah really is on a first-name basis with BERNIE!
Let’s start with Sarah’s CORE VALUE…”Fairness!” It goes back to her days in elementary school, when her fifth-grade teacher told her to be quiet. So annoyed at this indignity, she publicly called out the offending teacher by scrawling in chalk on a phone pole “Ms So-&-So is UNFAIR!” Another value she has developed from her experience on non-profits is “adherence to institutional procedures,” in order to enhance communication toward delivery the organizational mission. Perhaps we could add “QUESTION AUTHORITY” as another deep-seeded value.
Sarah is fine-tuning a PERSONAL MISSION to continue deeper involvement with both Simply Living and ComFest, as the two organizations share values that are nearly identical. She finds that orgs that operate by consensus, i.e., non-hierarchical leadership, are “extraordinary.” She has witnessed “consensus-in-action.”
Her EARLIEST MEMORY: The first time she saw her reflection in a mirror, at 3-1/2 to 4 years of age. “It was a transformative experience, a skin-shedding moment.” This metamorphosis turned out to be the onset of her self-awareness.
The EMOTIVE TEXTURE, the FEELING of CONNECTIVITY with others. “It feels like discovery; I like being with people who will think. It’s like one-ness, it’s like the feel of your skin when it’s at the same temperature as the air, like 98.6.”
On the SCARCITY/ABUNDANCE scale: Quoting David Byrne/Talking Heads’ “Stay Hungry.” I lost my linear line of questioning for a spell and somehow this question evolved into Noam Chomsky’s profound influence on Sarah.
The proverbial “BOX” that we’re occasionally encouraged to THINK OUTSIDE OF: Try as she might…as much as she wants to…she just can’t entirely fall in love yet with Columbus. And she does want to, and she’s working on this. This suggests that her BOX might be her progressive experience in Vermont.
IDEAS…where do they originate in Sarah’s world?
“Nature.” And often, “by throwing I Ching.”
Although not at all college-bound when her contemporaries were leaving high school, she eventually motivated herself to overcome her innate questioning of authority and reverse the institutional rejection to enter and graduate from Marlboro College in Vermont.
The prospect of UNCERTAINTY fazes Sarah not at all. She enjoys the challenge of the unknown, and in fact enjoys handling new situations, comparing such tests to that of a Vision Quest, going directly to the core of the matter, and clarifying certainty.
Sarah EFFECTS CHANGE with informed vision, foresight, and long-term organizational planning.
And in 5-YEARS, 2023, where/what of Sarah? Perhaps taking her place as an elder. Maybe resettling in Vermont or Maine, where she has family, but she wants to help ComFest become a legacy among progressive organizations in Columbus. She fears global climate change will disrupt millions, that many lives will be lost, and bitterly regrets that foresight and planning has been ignored.
