NOTE TO READERS: I feel the call to compose this post as I listen to John Coltrane’s “Love Supreme. CLICK HERE. Enjoy.
This interdisciplinary artist and I last met during the Bicentennial celebration at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center, where Daric once taught. Upon view of some of his art, I was immediately attracted to his esthetic.
So Daric, tell us your CORE VALUE: “Work must primarily be an act for it’s own intrinsic reward.” Whether in the activity of doing his art, or the activity of teaching, monetary compensation should be a side effect to the love of the doing.
What’s Daric’s EARLIEST MEMORY? At age 3-4, playing on a bunk bed in a room he shared with his close older sister, with her encouragement to dive off the top bunk onto a blanket she arranged with which to catch him. He crashed onto the floor and chipped every tooth in his mouth.
What is the EMOTIONAL TEXTURE, the FEEL of human CONNECTIVITY? “An emotional massage that is mutually soothing, symbiotic.” He prefers quality in friendship over the quantity of acquaintances.
Where is he on the scale of SCARCITY/ABUNDANCE? “Very weighted in scarcity; I work with a dynamic relationship in extremes.” He believes the long-term goal needs to balance this tension. He presents such iconography, symbols, derivations of archetypes, in his work.
Your “BOX,” the proverbial thing we’re often encouraged to “THINK OUTSIDE OF?” “Mine, I think, is a theoretical box. I can get so involved in content that I can forget other aspects. I need to get out of one-dimensional thinking.”
Who is your MUSE, the origin of your IDEAS? “Curiosity, as indirect insight. Intentional walks in nature. And in conversations. But especially in very lengthy, 40-minute showers, as a meditative incubator of creative inspiration.”
On UNCERTAINTY: Daric appreciates that he has a few friends, deep connections in his life, that he can bounce problems off of.
On EFFECTING CHANGE: “I love this question. I’m a DO-er. It’s imperative that I get involved directly in a problem I see before I would expect it to be addressed otherwise. Being involved personally is important. I never post anything political on social media.”
5-YEARS ahead, Daric/The World in 2023: He believes “our society will grow closer together. It’s easy to be pessimistic, so why not be optimistic? That’s much harder to do.”
Finally, WHATCHA READIN’? “An electronics pdf tutorial about LED robotics and best-practices.” It originates from a woman-owned company, Adafruit Industries, owned by a woman who goes by the moniker “Lady Ada,” referring to the 19th Century Lady Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and pioneer of theoretical computer science.
Much THANKS to you, Daric.
And THANKS, too, toward all readers of “CAFFEINE COMMUNION.”
