We first met when she opened her popular Short North restaurant, Double Comfort, on North High Street, directly across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Almost a year ago, March 26, 2017, she shuttered the physical location due to issues with the landlord, and pursed the Double Comfort mission in a different manner.
Mary began packaging Double Comfort Foods, sauces and spice blends, with all profits from sales going to local hunger-relief charities. Starting in 2014 and continuing now,
money for over 95,000 meals has been donated, and it grows with every purchase.
Giving back tastes good!
This segues into Mary’s CORE VALUES: Faith in God, helping others, leaving a small carbon footprint, and foremost…Integrity, which she practices with the high quality of ingredients in which she produces her spices and sauces.
Her current mission to EFFECT CHANGE: Helping get people on their feet. Her mission for Double Comfort Foods is “to be a revenue stream for hunger relief agencies.” Her business is not a 501c3 not-for-profit, but actually a social enterprise.
EARLIEST MEMORY: Mary, at about 2 or 3 in age, making too much noise by popping large balloons, possibly at a kids party.
Her FEELING of HUMAN CONNECTEDNESS: For Mary, this connectedness is “to feel stronger, because you have more support, somehow you feel bigger, a wider ability to see things and touch the people around you.” This, the strength of realizing the security and safety of such a connection.
On SCARCITY/ABUNDANCE: She places her life on the abundance end of this spectrum with the comfort and happiness provided by family and friends, but she has balanced this with her experience of material scarcity when she moved out on her own for college.
Mary’s proverbial “BOX” that we’re often encouraged to THINK OUTSIDE OF: Her box was her comfort zone, and to guide her as she left this box, her mantra was “The only thing to fear is fear itself.” She stepped out of her box.
The source of her IDEAS, her MUSE: “Whatever article I’m reading.” By keeping up with weekly news compilation sources, and by talking with people. “I love doing the research portion in my plans for Double Comfort Foods.” She has a vision to establish her next restaurant in two years.
On UNCERTAINTY: Mary is a planner, so she has no issue with uncertainty, “it’s something you strive to overcome, how can I land on my feet today. It’s always going to be there.”
Henceforth, 5-YEARS from now/2023: Mary hopes to see her family as thriving, anticipates keeping Columbus as “home,” and sees her hot sauce mission to serve as a major funder for hunger relief. Newman’s Own is an inspiring model for Double Comfort Foods and she envisions change in our national food distribution, such as in the farm-to-table movement. But the systems need refining to eliminate hunger. “Food is not scarce in our country.”
ANCESTRY: Mary is aware of the names back to her great-grandparents.
And finally, Mary…WHATCHA READIN’? I picked up a book, SOURDOUGH, at Gramercy Books in Bexley, about leaving a well-paying tech job in AI to start a career baking bread. Also, OPERATION MINCEMEAT is on my nightstand.
