And speaking of Brioso, remember the “parklet” gracing the street in front of coffee-shop-central at Gay & High a couple seasons ago? A project designed by Darin and the team at Transit Columbus, in partnership with PAST Foundation.
A former first-responder at a suburban-Dayton fire department, Darin has long-been about “renewing human capacity” and guiding veterans and returning citizens through their re-entry to employment. He started Solar by Soldiers for this purpose, to change the direction of lives, with jobs as a catalyst, a stepping stone.
CORE VALUES: “Compassion, empathy, helping people find their purpose,” which Darin defines as, “the one thing that makes everything else unnecessary.”
Current personal mission to EFFECT CHANGE: “Mentoring, helping those in at-risk populations to re-enter society through Second Chance Solar.”
EARLIEST MEMORY: Darin cites two early memories. At about age two, his older brothers tried to help quench his thirst by offering him water from a commode, which their mother intercepted just in time. At the same age he recalls running around a rug in his family living room, wearing a toy fireman hat, remembering in clear detail what he was wearing, how his parents were dressed, and the pattern on the rug.
Darin’s FEELING of HUMAN CONNECTEDNESS: “It feels like experiencing the Aurora Borealis, energy coursing through your veins. It’s what we have at the end of the day, connection, and memories.”
Where does he place his presence on the spectrum of SCARCITY/ABUNDANCE? The end of 2017 had him deep into a realm of scarcity, in terms of health and personal experiences but Darin now is “very fastly heading toward abundance.” Through guidance from his mentor he has developed a purpose-driven alignment, and it has helped him remove his limiters.
Darin’s proverbial “BOX” that we’re often encouraged to THINK OUTSIDE OF: He believes his box is “perfectionism, I used to be a perfectionist, I’m cured” and his task is to take his Big Picture overview of a project and break it down to workable tasks, steps. He has clear vision, hyper detail of his conceived projects. “When it comes into focus, I know it can be done. If it’s a little blurry, I haven’t figured it out yet.”
The source of his IDEAS, his MUSE: “Life experiences, my upbringing from excellent parents.”
On UNCERTAINTY: “A lot of people have doubt, of an outcome, I don’t. It might not be in the timing I want, but it will be done.”
Henceforth, 5-YEARS from now/2023: “I’m as excited as I’ve been in a long time, impacting the people I work with. There are more good people than bad, there will be a positive connecting of the dots, rippling through our society. There will be the magic of people being aligned.”
Darin’s ANCESTRY: His background is almost entirely German and Scottish, and he has a personal memory of his great-grandfather, a farmer, feeding corncobs to hogs, with tobacco juice on his chin. A grandfather prospected for gold in the Black Hills, and also uranium.
Finally, Darin…WHATCHA READIN’? The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results and Pivot: The Art and Science of Reinventing Your Career and Life and THE REVENANT.
As we departed, I asked Darin of the distinction he makes in his usage of “balance” and “counter-balance.” “Balance means you’re not moving, it’s not effecting change. With your activity, you are serving as catalyst, a counter-balance, to cause an impact.”
Thank You, Darin, for your time and interview.
